The common threads of evidence in Kingsport about tales of a
mysterious creature sworn to exist by Cherokee Indians and sworn to have
been seen from time to time by most of the early white settlers living
in the valley, up and down the Holston River along the River Road, now known as “Big Elm Road” near Sensabaugh Tunnel.
The creature was legendary even before the first white settlers moved into ...the area.
Cherokee Indians called the creature “Oolonga-Doglalla”, roughly
translated as “spirit with knife teeth” and knew it as a ghostly,
spirit-like creature that is both part Human and part Dog that roamed
the North Fork of the Holston River valley at night, moaning and
bellowing and sometimes killing solitary natives at random. Over time,
the name was corrupted by the early white settlers into “The Long Dog”,
mainly because they couldn’t pronounce Oolnga-Doglalla.
The
name “Long Dog” was fitting, in the minds of the white people, because
of the common description of the creature by those who had seen it but
escaped attack.
The creature was said to lope when it ran, much
like a wolverine moves. That is to say, it’s leaping movement brought
its hind legs up under its front legs and its back arched at each
stride, not unlike the movement of an inchworm. The creature moved this
way at slow movement or on the run. The scariest, most terrifying sight
was to see the creature moving along in its hideous lope, off to the
side, parallel to your path but gaining on you even as you stepped
faster and faster to get home before it caught you.
Also, the
creature was quite long; some say as long as five or six feet long,
fully outstretched. So that seemed to fit the corrupted Cherokee name.
It had perhaps the length of a large, stout panther, but did not look
like a panther and with a much shorter tail. This creature was said to
have yellowish-red, glowing eyes that were clearly fiery looking,
glowing in the night. Its breath, and it’s difficult to know how someone
smelled its breath and survived, was said to have the acrid smell of
burning sulfur. Its hair was not sleek and shiny like a panther; rather
it was matted and oily. Tracks found along the riverbank showed great,
long, sharp claws.
Yet, even though signs and evidence ascribed
to the creature were like those of a living beast, it was known to
appear and disappear; to take the form of the “Long Dog” sometimes and
yet sometimes transform into a spirit-like, ghostly shape; like that of a
“living dead zombie”, or vice versa, for lack of a better description.
Kingsport's Cherokee Dog-Man Spirit That the Cherokee Indians Believed
dwell near the North Fork of the Holston River near Sensabaugh
Tunnel..................isn't it interesting that centuries after the
Cherokee left this region, that our culture also believes that same
Sensabaugh Tunnel area to be haunted. Two different cultures in two
different centuries, and yet both believe that same area to be haunted.
....ask yourself, what are the odds of that
Wow!! What a fascinating account. I tend to put our Native American friends stories, accounts,a little higher on the scale than many references. Simply being that these souls were here, and lived on,and about this great country, first, and learned many great things, about, well,,from what I've read and understood,,everything!! It's truly intriguing,to read historical accounts like this. I bet this account in particular, may sound awfully familler,eh Scott? Or should I say, look a tad familler.,,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing such an interesting account my friend. Sounds every bit as terrifying as dogman sightings in any other local!
Thinking about something a little more,,,the part regarding the breath, reeking of sulfur,.,.hmm. That rings a bell,as well.
The first race of people(s) were the more than 42 clans of the Hopi (First People) across the PacificOcean in the vast dim time of the beginning of this (4th World), which is closing down now. many of the Northern peoples def COULD be ancestored via the Bering Strait, but they would be geographically acclimated to the Northern Canadian country and further North. The Aztecs, like the Maya, have their respective root origins from the Hopi clans which is centered between Northern Arizona and deep into the south in fact all the way down to the furthest southern point of South America. Any pyramids found in Northern America could be of Aztec and/or Mayan culture, but be assured that the pyramid(s) and their origin are stricty Hopi, and figure quite prominently in the Hopi historical accounts beginning with their arrival from the destruction of the last (3d World). Scientists of (Modern day) can believe anything they want, but the true history of the rises and falls of culture, race and civilization in the Americas is much more fascinating than what modern man is aware.
DeleteInteresting how the description of how it ran sounds like descriptions I have heard of the bigfoot on all fours. I believe M.K. Davis has a video that exemplifies this motion with the back legs both coming at once almost to the head of the creature in an almost rabbit-like motion. Thanks for sharing this interesting story.
ReplyDeleteWow. Keep this stuff coming Please... Amazing! I can listen to Native culture all day long but when it comes to this stuff; is there anything better?
ReplyDeletePeace.
I caught pictures of bf that look like they have ears. I sort of thought it might be a disguise or a "hair-do" of sorts. That's what I thought...gee, sure hope I am right and you are wrong. Any footprints? I found prints on a sandy roadside....a big and little something....sort of long and skinny....?
ReplyDeleteThis creature is close to the description of the Greek monster Cerberus who is a hell hound. Big, black, horrible stench, and red or yellow eyes. Also it hangs around the cave. In Greek mythology hell hounds cane out of Hades through caves and gaurded the entrancesto hell. The fact that the long dog can disappear and reappear out of the shadows follows the hell hounds ability to shadow jump, jump into a shadow and appear out of another. Two cultures on opposite sides of the world one centuries before the other.
